I rebuilt my kiln in the summer of 2003 for 2 main reasons; one it was too big for one potter working alone. I worked too hard cranking out pots to fill it, and being a production potter had never been my goal. I originally thought a bigger kiln with multiple chambers would allow me greater options to be creative. But in reality the effort it took to fill it and the infinite variables involved worked to stifle my creativity.
And two it was hard to fire. By reducing the length I could increase
the pitch and have less trouble reaching temp. I also lowered the angle of the front arch to parallel the pitch of the floor.
My recommendation to anyone building a wood kiln for the first time; keep it small and simple with room to expand later if you want.
