This last fall was a very exciting time for me. I had the privilege to host Peter Callas for a firing, a workshop, lecture and 2 exhibitions.

Peter is the foremost wood-fire potter in America having been the first person to build an anagama in the U.S over 30 years ago. His long collaboration with Peter Voulkos is the stuff of legend, but what immpressed me most was his personal relationship with clay the fire.

Peter arrived with 3 enormous boxes of bisqued ware. We went to the kiln and immediately started loading.
Over the next 3 days, Peter made a number of sake bottles
and cups to load around the fire mouth. After struggling a bit early on with temp we were able to steady it out and knock over cone 12. Peter has refined the 'hikidashi' technique of pulling pots out of the kiln at high temp, to consistently produce spectacular pots, and it was the highlight of the firing.
After the firing, Peter held a one day demonstration for some of my students and other local potters. He later held an exhibition at the Sho Gallery in Central Osaka and after that at Gallery Rerun in Takrazuka.
These are pictures from Peter's visit.
